Designing Makeup for the Stage: My Journey with Odyssey on MSC World America
Being a bridal makeup artist, an event makeup specialist, and an international makeup artist, I’ve had the pleasure of working with incredible creatives from all walks of life. Over the years, I’ve collaborated with designers, producers, directors, agency owners, and photographers—many of whom Iam still in contct with
One of those talented creatives is Lee Newby, an exceptional set and wardrobe designer (remember that name!). Lee and I previously worked together on The Enfield Haunting (2023/2024), and after a recent catch-up call, he invited me to join his latest project—a brand-new stage production on MSC’s newest global ocean liner, World America.
Designing Hair & Makeup for Odyssey
When Lee shared the opportunity, I was immediately intrigued. My role? To design hair and makeup that complement the wardrobe and set for Odyssey, a spectacular new musical production on board World America. Being surrounded by such creative minds always ignites my passion, so I was a “yes” before we even discussed contracts! (Note to self: I should really become more business-savvy.)
This blog isn’t just about my involvement—it’s about how projects like these come together. It’s fascinating to see how a production company assembles a team of specialists, from set designers to wardrobe experts to makeup artists, to bring a vision to life.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Lee was brought on board for his exceptional talent in stage and costume design. Recognizing that a show of this caliber required a professional makeup artist, he reached out to me in November.
After seeing his initial wardrobe sketches, I started brainstorming makeup looks that would enhance the characters and storytelling. I sketched out concepts, then invited a few models to my West Sussex studio to experiment and bring the ideas to life. The biggest challenge? At that point, I hadn’t received headshots or a full storyline—I was essentially throwing ideas at the wall, hoping something would stick!
The Unexpected Journey
Initially, I was set to fly to France in February to meet the cast and refine the designs with Lee and his costume team. However, due to delays, the plans changed. After several discussions about logistics and budgets, the best solution was for me to join Lee and Carol (head of wardrobe) for the ship’s Atlantic crossing to Miami.
I didn’t fully believe it was happening until I received my ticket—just 10 days before departure! Suddenly, my schedule became a whirlwind of last-minute makeup kit shopping, client rescheduling, and packing. Questions flooded my mind:
What’s the weather like on an Atlantic crossing?
Will my meals be provided?
Do any performers have allergies?
What makeup products do they already have in their kits?
Are they experienced in doing their own stage makeup?
Now, as I prepare for this exciting adventure, I can’t wait to share what happens next. Stay tuned for my next update!
Ciao for now
